About Dr Marina Hughes

Marina Hughes is a consultant cardiologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital. She is a clinically committed congenital and paediatric cardiologist, who specialises in cardiac MRI for adults or children with all types of congenital heart disease, heart valve abnormality, aortopathy or cardiomyopathy.

Marina trained in medicine in Western Australia and then completed post-graduate research and a DPhil in Clinical Medicine at Oxford. Her first consultant post was at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne where she was lead for echocardiography. Marina then trained in Cardiac MRI, before being appointed as a consultant cardiologist at Great Ormond St Hospital in 2006.  Marina was the clinical lead for Cardiac MRI at Great Ormond Street for many years, and helped to develop and shape the service as a world-leading centre in cardiovascular imaging.

Marina has had more than 10 years of consultant-level scanning experience, scanning more than 400 complex congenital cardiac MRI’s per year.  The caseload at Great Ormond Street Hospital includes all of the cross-sectional imaging for the Adult Congenital Heart Disease service at Barts Heart Centre; one of the largest ACHD services in Europe.

Marina has published many research articles in imaging and has regularly been invited to join Faculty and teach at local and international conferences and courses, including the SCMR annual scientific conference, EuroCMR, British Society of Cardiovascular Imaging and the Royal Society of Medicine.
