The Chenies Mews Imaging Centre are now able to offer a new MRI scanning service to patients who have congenital heart disease.

Congenital heart disease includes any kind of structural problem of the heart that occurs from birth. This may involve the atrial or ventricular chambers, the heart valves, or the connecting arteries and veins.

Clinical problems related to a structural abnormality of the heart may not be evident until adult life, and the symptoms can be similar to symptoms from other kinds of heart disease.  Structural heart disease needs to be specifically considered and investigated by experienced staff, in order to reach the diagnosis.

Additionally, patients who have had surgery in childhood for congenital heart disease usually need life-time follow up, to monitor and check for long-term problems related to their initial operations.  Sensitive and accurate imaging is vital for the care of these complex patients.

Detailed scanning

Our cardiac MRI service for patients with congenital heart disease involves a detailed scan including 3D images and individually-planned 2D images to assess valve function, ventricular function, cardiac shunts and abnormal flow patterns. This kind of scan usually takes about 45-60 minutes to complete.

Comprehensive reporting

The scan is attended, optimized and reported by world-renowned, highly experienced experts in congenital heart disease. This specialist knowledge includes all the interventional options for newly diagnosed conditions, and all the long-term issues related to previous or childhood cardiac surgery.

The report information gives a comprehensive assessment of the specific problems and the overall haemodynamic situation. This often forms a crucial decision guide for the referring physician.
